Much of Iraq’s north and west fell to the Islamic State group in the summer of 2014, but over the past year Iraq’s military has slowly regained pockets of territory. While IS still controls a large swath of Iraq and neighboring Syria, the group has lost an estimated 40 percent of the territory it once held in Iraq, according to U.S.-led coalition officials.

Lights out: Cities worldwide mark the 10th annual Earth Hour

People holding candles mark Earth Hour after the lights are switched off in front of St. Basil Cathedral on Red Square in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, March 19, 2016. The participants said they also used the event to pay tributes to the victims of the Dubai plane crash in southern Russia that killed all 62 people aboard on Saturday.
Cities around the world turned out the lights Saturday evening to mark the 10th annual Earth Hour, a global movement dedicated to protecting the planet and highlighting the effects of climate change.

As night came on, the lights went out in cities from South Korea to the United States in what the World Wildlife Fund describes as a moment of solidarity for climate action. The group sponsors the event and says people in 178 countries and territories had planned to participate.
