Thousands of people in the Indonesian province of Aceh took refuge for the night in mosques and temporary shelters after a strong earthquake Wednesday killed a large number of people and destroyed dozens of buildings.
Damage from the earthquake that shook Indonesia's Aceh province on Wednesday is extensive in towns near the epicenter. A market was leveled, and other buildings reduced to chunks of cement and twisted rebar.

A Haitian merchant tries to salvage her belongings at a market Petion-Ville suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Sunday Nov. 20, 2016. Hours after voting ended, a major fire raged at a central market in the hillside Petionville district above Port-au-Prince but the cause wasn't immediately clear.
A mysterious fire swept through sections of a Haitian market hours after polls closed in national elections, leaving scrap-wood stalls and inventory in ashes.

Vendors picked through the ashes Monday looking for anything they could salvage. A lucky few found half-burnt sacks of vegetables and grain. But most could only recover blackened scraps of sheet metal roofing.

In this Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 photo, a Pakistani man living near Hira cave reads before sunrise on Noor Mountain, where the Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from God to preach Islam, on the outskirts of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is one of Islam’s most important historical sites _ the cave where the Prophet Muhammad spent time in seclusion, contemplation and self-reflection.
Just outside the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia lies one of Islam's most important historical sites — a cave where, according to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad spent time in seclusion, contemplation and self-reflection.
It was here, inside Hira Cave located near the top of a steep hill called Noor Mountain, where Muslims believe God revealed to the prophet the first verses of the Quran through the angel Jebril, or Gabriel as he is named in English.

It was nearly 42 years ago that two men met just before dawn on Oct. 30, 1974, to earn $5 million in the Rumble in the Jungle. In one of boxing's most memorable moments, Muhammad Ali stopped the fearsome George Foreman to recapture the heavyweight title in the impoverished African nation of Zaire.

Flame for Rio Olympics is lit at birthplace of ancient Games

President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee Carlos Nuzman speaks during the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame in Ancient Olympia, Greece, Thursday, April 21, 2016. The flame will be transported by torch relay to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, which will host the 2016 Olympic Games.
The Olympic flame has been kindled at the birthplace of the ancient games in Greece, heralding the start of a 15-week journey leading to the Aug. 5 opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.

IOC and Rio organizing committee leaders attended Thursday's flame-lighting at Ancient Olympia, where antiquity's greatest sporting event was held for over 1,000 years.
